I am the wife of a high functioning alcoholic. He is a worthy employee in a mid level management business. He is an notable male parent who adores his two young sons and he has been a good husband to me (I can probably count the times we have raised our voices in angriness, in fourteen years) and he is a great and sincere friend. His boozing has increased and stepped up since the birth of our first boy nearly ten years past. I inadvertently discovered that he had been hiding vodka in our home office in the form of vodka plane bottles. He drinks beer in front of us but just drinks vodka behind closed doors. After 5 PM he becomes drunk quickly and often doesn?t even last until the children?s bedtime. I want to shield my sons from his boozing. I sought out assistance in the form of personal therapy and al-anon, which has helped. I pressed him to try out therapy and he did but was speedily released because, (by his own admission), he did not fully reveal. He has only lately looked for the help of AA and it seems to be of some help. I am very unequivocal in the fact that I do not want to be co-dependant and that I need him to know that I strongly disapprove of the drinking while I want to provide some positive reinforcement when he does not imbibe.
